The most popular piece of content from HonestReporting in 2012 may have been the most important. The video depicted footage of a Palestinian man apparently hurt in Israel’s Pillar of Defense operation in Gaza being rushed to an ambulance, only to be seen seconds later walking around as though nothing had happened.
Although the Reuters footage was clearly staged, it was used in the coverage of the conflict on the BBC and CNN. HR’s video demonstrated that “Pallywood” was alive and well in Gaza. The video, seen by hundreds of thousands of people, alerted the public not to trust any media coming out of Gaza during the conflict.
In the end, CNN broadcaster Anderson Cooper acknowledged that the footage could not be verified and apologized for using it. The BBC, however, refused to admit it was duped.
