Hamas Summer Camps Back In the Spotlight

Pictures of the Year International announced their winners list. Among the honorees is Scott Nelson for his photo series of a Hamas summer camp for kids.

The reward’s well-deserved not just because his photos put the military-style camps back in the spotlight. Nelson’s excellent captions show how photographers at their best are capable of providing a context beyond the visual. One example:

Young Palestinian boys aim wooden practice pistols during a Sunday, August 5, 2007 Hamas sponsored summer camp in the Nuseirat camp in the Gaza strip. Up to 100,000 kids from age 7-16 are given military style training 6 days a week at Hamas camps across the Gaza strip for 3 hours per day.
