Hi Ho Hari: Plagiarizing Columnist Suspended

July 13, 2011 13:43 by

Johann Hari

HonestReporting and Independent columnist Johann Hari have something of a history:

  • In 2008, Hari compared Israel to excrement: ““Whenever I try to mouth these words [of reassurance for Israel], a remembered smell fills my nostrils. It is the smell of shit.”
  • In the same opinion piece, he used a falsified quotation to assert that Israel was guilty of “ethnic cleansing” in 1948 despite the fact that he had previously been warned that it was false.
  • Following our critique of his work, Hari failed to respond to the charges, instead attacking HonestReporting as part of “a campaign to smear anybody who tries to describe the plight of the Palestinian people. It is an attempt to intimidate and silence – and to a large degree, it works….”

Indeed, Hari has come under HR’s spotlight on numerous occasions for one-sided opinion pieces attacking Israel. At the time of his excrement op-ed, we stated that Hari’s use of an invented quotation is enough to bring the rest of the content and his own judgment into disrepute.

So perhaps the news that Hari has been suspended from the Independent pending an inquiry into allegations of plagiarism shouldn’t come as a surprise. As The Guardian reports:

Hari was accused of plagiarism last month by journalists and bloggers who condemned his practice of sometimes using quotes which he presented as being made to him in interviews, when in fact they were taken from older articles or the interviewees’ own books.

He seemed to have survived the initial plagiarism allegations, but is now facing separate claims of “sock puppetry” – that he used an online alias to hit back at fellow journalists who had criticised his work.

The Daily Telegraph notes:

He [Hari] denied plagiarism but since then users of the internet have found further examples of him allegedly recycling quotes.

In one case, an interview of veteran journalist Ann Leslie, critics said 545 words of his nearly 5,000-word piece came from an article she wrote in the Daily Mail. …

Chris Blackhurst, the new editor of the Independent, said: “Johann Hari has been suspended for two months pending the outcome of an internal inquiry. We have no further comment to make.” …

Writing on his blog after the allegations first surfaced, Hari said the accusation was “totally false” but added he did “have something to apologise for”.

He said: “I did not and never have taken words from another context and twisted them to mean something different – I only ever substituted clearer expressions of the same sentiment, so the reader knew what the subject thinks in the most comprehensible possible words.”

Why is it, however, that prior questions that we asked surrounding Hari’s credibility were not investigated? Is plagiarising false quotations from anti-Israel websites considered to be acceptable journalism? Or does the Independent not consider journalistic integrity to be an issue when it comes to reporting on Israel?

It seems that we already know the answer to that last question. The Independent has a habit of ignoring journalistic errors when it comes to coverage of Israel.

In October 2006, notoriously anti-Israel journalist Robert Fisk and Independent writer was given the front page of the Independent to spread the libel that Israel had used uranium-based weapons in southern Lebanon during that summer’s war.

HonestReporting challenged this at the time following a UN investigation clearing Israel of the allegations only a short time later. We castigated the Independent for its shoddy journalism but to this day, neither the paper nor Fisk have issued a retraction.

Perhaps this has something to do with the attitude of the Independent’s former editor Simon Kelner who has only recently been replaced and moved upstairs. At the time that the Hari allegations first surfaced, Kelner said that:

while what Hari did was “wrong” it was born from an honest ambition.

“In the great scheme of things it’s not a great scandal, it’s a naive error which we recognise”.

He added that the Independent was investigating at the time “who knew and what they knew”, adding that “of course we’re going to look at some of the pieces he’s done in the past and review them”.

It is certainly time to review some of Hari’s past work including examples such as the one above that raise question marks over his credibility and journalistic ethics.

Why is it that an issue of journalistic integrity is not considered to be a legitimate issue when it involves coverage of Israel? In Hari’s mind and perhaps in the minds of the Independent’s editorial team, using false quotations or, in the case of Fisk, spreading false libels, is apparently acceptable.

Only when such practices go beyond the Israel stories do they seemingly become the subject of concern or outrage. As we have consistently maintained, coverage of Israel and the Middle East should be subject to the same general standards of journalism that are supposed to operate.

Johann Hari’s suspension is a welcome development for holding the media to proper journalistic standards. Does this and a new editor signal a sea change in the Independent’s attitude and will coverage of Israel in the paper be a beneficiary?

The jury is very much still out.

When Israel is involved, truth goes out of the window and any lie will do. The Financial Times recently published an article that used no statistics or references to back up its claim that the West Bank was poverty-stricken and in desperate straits, when its GDP is rising faster than Israel’s. And how could this not be the case, considering that dollar-for-dollar per head of the population the West Bank and Gaza have more charity money poured into them than any country on earth?

It appears quite evident that the only truth regurgitated from this vile creature was his statement…”a remembered smell fills my nostrils. It is the smell of shit.” However, I submit that the origin of this foul stench actually eminates from the rotten remnant of his soul.

Hari is only one of many who use long standing hatred and bigotry toward Israel and the Jewish people to win popularity/publicity contests. Propaganda about Israel is popular. Scapegoating Israel and Jews has always worked. He has made a name for himself by jumping on this famous bandwagon. It doesn’t matter if it is true, based in fact, important news, it sells and Hari is telling haters what they want to hear.

There is a well funded anti Israel, Arab money backed machine ready to provide falsified photos, blatant lies and exaggerated statistics to the masses that want them.

Never mind that Arab terrorists are operating in 18 countries, demanding land for peace, blowing up indigenous peoples, using terror tactics to secure power and control and dominance. Only focus on Israel because it is popular.

It would be too hard for Hari to actually work to investigate what is going on worldwide and bring to the attention of the world the reality of Arab terrorism across the globe. It’s easier to repeat hatred spewed by others and to sell it as his own.

He wouldn’t be so popular either. Israel and Jew hating sells!

He might become a target of Arab death squads like other reporters who actually tried to speak the truth about the real issue of extremist Arab terrorism.

Israel is just a scapegoat to draw attention away from the reality of the Arab extremist’s world dominance strategy. No one wants to focus on this issue. After all, there is oil at stake.

For all I know he was born to Jewish parents. Whatever his lineage I must respectfully disagree. His hate for Jews and Israel is a deep seated psychological disorder and a mental/emotional defect that has been and will continue to be on the level of a global epidemic. Everyone has a ‘junk science’ theory as to what spawns so much rancor…I’m no different. I have long felt that the unfortunate phrase…’chosen people’…has been so grossly misinterpreted as to create a sibling rivalry mindset on par with ‘mom always liked you best’. If you are Jewish or well informed than you know that the ‘chosen people’ label is both a blessing and a burden. It does not elevate us above Righteous Gentiles. But the masses tend to interpret this as a favorite child status. This spawns envy and eventual resentment, primarily towards us and to a lesser degree towards G-D. For many years I have had direct contact with white supremacists and generic Jew haters. They all speak the phrase ‘chosen people’ as though they are spitting-out sour milk.

I am really not an expert on these issues, but I was under the impression that the term “chosen people” did not refer only to “being loved by Lord”, but also to trials and subsequent sufferings meted out by HIM. In other words, I am not sure if all those who envy us the status of “chosen people”, would enjoy all that much being chosen themselves.

When we were given His laws on Mt Sinai were not chosen to receive special grace or eternal glory above others. The Jews were chosen to be a blessing to all the Nations of the earth…to be a light onto the Nations through the sharing of his words and our deeds. (Read Genesis 12). And you are correct. Few would enjoy the burden of responsibility. My point is the hatred is not rational. It is more akin to a derangement syndrome spawned by the missinterpretation of the phrase, ‘chosen people’. Keep in mind this is only my ‘armchair quarterbacking’ viewpoint. I have no qualifications (other than a great deal empirical evidence/personal observation) that makes my opinion any more credible than the next person. As Comedian-commentator Dennis Miller often says: “…That’s just my opinion, I could be wrong!…”

Point well taken – but what I was trying to say, albeit rather awkwardly, is that by choosing us to be the “blessing”, He also suggested in a rather stern fashion that it is a process and to get there “ain’t gonna be easy”. So, on top of that responsibility you mentioned, I really don’t think that many would be willing to accept that process.

You may very well be correct. Sadly, I am no Torah scholar. It has been my understanding/belief (perhaps wrongly so) that it was our acknowledgement of the one true G-D (monotheism) over the more commonly accepted theology of many (pagan) gods that endeared us to HIM. I welcome any learned correction or clarification.

RE: “… In the great scheme of things it’s not a great scandal, it’s a naive error which we recognise .”…[realize - correct spelling].

It is definitely obvious that when lying fails, distortion and falsification fails, the one rapid accessible “aid” is the timeless panacea of ‘plagiarism’. Why is it that so many if not all anti-Semites sound the same, repeating the same dreary, inevitable, drivel..well here is the proof – the consider is simply to defame, and or libel Jews. While many European Anti-Semites of note did have some imagination, their talent, I suspect emanated from the limited vision that being a “wordsmith” bestows. The “naivete” label simply does not stand up. This “writer,” is simply beyond description, one can barely launch any feasible protest against this level of pathology – never mind that he obviously would not understand, truly, that amorality is a severe deficiency that can not be set aside, not explained, and certainly not used to “reason away,” his degenerate mindset. I contend, that it is also highly improbable that his “mind” is set, on anything but vacuous repetition of coarseness, filth, and the basest of human qualities. I consider this person so undeveloped, in many important aspects, that it is almost unfair and indecent to hold him “accountable,” for his actions, I sincerely do not believe that he understands much about values, moral life, ethics, not even I am afraid, basic common sense; his instincts for self-reservation are even questionable.

In this sense, honesty, and integrity are even part of a language he has never considered, in my view. How can anyone even take him to task for not “cluing in” to the loftiness, obligations, responsibilites, and duties, of a Torah filled life, by Secular, Orthodox, Moder Orthodox, Reform Orthodox, Atheistic, Agnostic, Cultural Jews, and much more that I do not include, with various levels and degrees of knowledge, practice, and understanding of Torah??

it is, in my view, asking a filthy, oil-soaked, dirt filled rag to clean one’s glasses to enable viewing the Stars!!!!

Well Ian, there could be something in the notion that a percentage of non-Jews resent the chosen people tag.

However as a Gentile, I have never been concerned about the term, and neither have any of my Christian friends.

For me, the primary duty for Jews and Christians is to stand together against the death cult of islam and the ongoing jihad being waged against the West.

Hari is just another third rate hack who apparently is incapable of evaluating facts and engaging in logical thought.

By his own words he reveals himself as a deplorable and despicable person.

First, by definition, my ‘theory’ could not apply to any righteous Gentile such as yourself. It was primarily reserved for the irrationality of anti-Semites and Jew Haters. I make the distinction as it can be argued that arabs are a semitic people and therefore cannot be anti-Semites. Sadly, there are far too many secular, self hating Jews who buy into the anti-Jewish propoganda.

Second, as the saying goes, hate the sin, not the sinner. I am only human and have difficulty separating the two. However, I have expended a great deal of time, energy, money and effort standing up against the ‘sin’ of islamic lies while doing my best to avoid attacking the people (as a whole or individually) who perpetuate the lies. If, for no other reason, I want to avoid giving my enemies the opportunity to characterize me as a bigot or xenophobe thereby marginalizing me with a population that is obsessed with ‘political correctness’. I do not have unlimited time or resources and need to apply what I have in the most effective manner.

Third, Knowledge and Wisdom is power. I do my homework, know my history and voice the truth that counters the lies at all possible opportunities. Being a ‘Light Onto The Nations’ means sharing the Truth that is Torah. I believe it should include historical truth as well, less the haters rewrite our history to suit their evil agenda. The pen IS mightier than the sword when it is used to record lies that slander, denegrade and eventually destroy.

          Thank You for your support.

You are more correct than you know about the “sibling rivalry” comparison. Why else do the nastiest Jew-hating groups always – always! – try to co-opt the phrase, &/or call themselves “the REAL Jews”?

But, as to the subject of this article – is anyone really surprised? He lies about Israel all the time, in juvenile ways, & is rewarded; rather than be surprised at his comeuppance (however slight it may be – I would also not be surprised if all he got was a slap on the wrist), I think we should all

      a) remember the fauxtography scandal at al-Reuters WRT the bombing in Lebanon
      b) expect to hear more of the same about many of the “journalists” who smear – er, cover Israel.

I concur. No individual or Nation is beyond reproach. Both are human entities and therefore inherently flawed. That said, I kow of no other Nation or people who go to the extremes that the Jews and Israel do to behave in a fair and just manner. Israel does this nearly to the point of insanity. Name me one other Nation that allows it’s enemies to hold a seat of power in it’s governing body. As to burning in hell, I submit that he is already burning in a Hell of his own design.

Honest Ambition is supposed to be about, and correct me if I’m Wrong” about HONESTY ,,,,based on truth ,,and NON Biased opinions .Thats what a true and HONEST journalist Does,,NO?The Independant did the right thing in Suspending Hari, and hopefully his reputation will be damaged beyond repair.

Moreover all journalists from the Independent, The Guardian should be barred from entering our country and make it known categorically that they would be arrested and incarcerated for quite sometime before being thrown out of our country after making sure they do not even take one grain of sand from our land on their person and with a roll of toilet paper hanging from their necks..

After years of reading these journalists and for that matter listening to politicians of all colours, when it comes to Israel I now firmly believe that their mindset is one of pure anti-Semitism.
For I can see no logic within their arguments that can vilify one democratic country to the extent that they do.
I once thought that after the last world war the Hebrew had at last gained the respect from the world that had so badly treated them down the millennia and to which they richly deserve for their contribution to humanity.
Sadly this was only a rest-bite. For yet again the pseudo liberal left, chattering class have re-kindled the “Elders of Zion” syndrome.

When the Irgun (I thought it was the other group of freedom fighters) blew up the King david Hotel, IT WAS SOLDIERS that were targeted. The Muslims, on the other hand, target chidlren; women and civilians-afraid to fight soldiers.

I am under the impression, however, that a great deal of the British (left especially) hatred of Israel and Jews in general is, in 1948, a rag tag group of people, 1/3 destroyed, beat the British-and the first colonly since 1776 to win a war of independence from the British (yes, the UN voted to establish the State of Israel, but Britain was defeated) and from that the rest of the (“The Sun Never Sets on The) British Empire disolved, like sugar in a cup of hot tea.

I think that the News of the World scandal and the associated inquiries will uncover the fact that the entire media industry in the UK is “infected” with a variety of problems and has lost its ways; it is an agenda-driven media that his willing to break not only all journalistic standards but also the law. Clearly, in the case of Israeli-Palestinian conflict the agenda-driven content is at extreme level and Johann Hari with his plagarism and filthy language and Robert Fisk with his liable are just two more examples of that. I can only hope that the blowout of News of the World will finally lead to a cleanup of the UK Media or it will become as “credible” as the Arab Media (with the exception maybe of Al Jazeera.)

Even when evil is exposed and admtted, there is a reluctance to condemn the culprit. During the first Gulf War, callers to chat programmes on radio would call in and comment along the following lines: “I’m against Saddam Hussain, but at least he has stood up to the Americans” Always a “BUT” to indicate with whom they truly sympathise with: Praising with faint damns. And the same goes with the likes of Kelner. Hari was “wrong” BUT it was a tiny mistake and on the whole he is right and you are always wrong. Truth can stare them in the face, but perverse ideological thinking will turn a lie into truth for political expedeiency. This is reminiscent of totalitarianism.

When I was a child I was told not to be offended by childish insults but rather to consider the source. To say that as a Democracy we must ‘Accept’ the opinions of others is complete nonsense. Perhaps to acknowledge the offering of an opinion and then either accept or rebuke would be more accurate a statement. As to what type of opinion to accept or respect…that would be based on the merits of the opinion. If it is constructive criticism then certainly should be considered. But when the critics range from foolhardy, ill-informed do-gooders all the way down to outright liars and propagandists, the opinions should be rejected in the harshest possible manner. The bulk of the criticisms’ are aimed like a guided missile at the very heart of Israel with the ultimate goal being Israel’s Murder. From the Arab cesspool referred to as the United Nations to the uber-leftist propaganda machine of the print and boob-tube media. The assault on this tiny ray of hope in a region that knows only oppression and hate is relentless. Make no mistake…If Israel was not a Righteous Nation, she could not have survived this long. Only by the Grace of G-d has Israel existed and will continue to do so…Baruch Hashem!

Hari is just another semi-literate and half-ignorant “journalist” – not unlike Robert Fisk – whose anti-Israel (Jew-hatred) vitriol appears to be welcome on the pages of The Guardian (Guardian of what?) or The Independent (Independent from the Muslim propaganda?). As Muslims gain in numbers and power in Britain, these brave “defenders of the truth” will become even more subservient to the political and genocidal policies of the oil sheikhs.
But, there will be a reawakening, and we are awaiting that day.

I have studied the cause of Anti-Semitism for over forty years.

First one has to understand that an insult is when a person’s self esteem is lessened. eg. saying to a person such things as, “you’re ugly,” “you’re stupid,” “you stink,”and the like.

Jewish people being called, “the chosen people,” is a lessening of the self esteem of others. To make matters worse, every unbiased demographic survey shows that, percentage wise, Jewish people are among the most creative, intelligent, most succesful, best behaved and most sympathetic to others.

This literally drives some other people crazy. Jews will often point out that while the Jews are about 0% of the world population they win about 18% of the nobel prizes. The disparity in winning literary and art prizes is similar. When given a free society their financial and political success is also shown to be extraordinay. I could go on to many fields and demonstrate the gigantic success, but I hope by now you get the picture.

Anti-Semites can not tell the truth about what is eating them up so they make up grotesque and vicious lies that have no basis in reality. The Jewish people take the bait and trumpet their success and try to counter the lies by quoting facts and statistics and saying to the world, “look how wonderful we are.” What they do is the equivalent of trying to put out a fire by pouring kerosine on it.

When someone currently calls a Jew, “Christ Killer,” it is not possible that they believe the person they are refering to, actually killed Christ. It’s that they need to say something that everyone knows is not possible, so there is no use in denying the charge, The same goes for the numerous outlandish claims they make everyday.

Then there is the history of generation to generation anti-Semitism. Children from their earliest ages hear anti-Jewish talk from their parents and are infected with the poison without critically thinking for themselves.

During the Nazi period, the staff and student bodies of the German Universities played a large roll in the perpetuation of Jew hatred. It is they who were too often being out done by Jews. Now in America, Canada and England, many college campuses are hotbeds of anti-Semitism, often being masked as anti-Zionism. It is always the academic setting in which Jewish accomplishment is feared.

I will stop now as I don’t see the need for more proof of what has transpired and is transpiring, and there is much more, will change any minds.

While your post was a great deal more articulate than mine it would seem that you have given some validation to my observations.

I never read Johann Hari, but I have read about his writings here.

I look at his pictures shown here and I see a BRAIN FULL OF FECAL MATTER hence the smell he referred to.

Johann oh you poor soul the fecal matter in your brain is not going to go away, and you have to keep smelling it.

The destiniy of Jews and Israel is not in the hands of those who approve or disapprove.

Israel is here to STAY, PROSPER AND THRIVE whether the NITWITTS of world like it or not.

It’s upheaval time in the British news world. Johann Hari may have to return to Germany or wherever he’s from. Murdoch is going down and now the Independent can drown.
Johann Hari and his Saudi Prince lover may now break up once he’s no longer useful to him.

The News Media needs to be more ojective and not to continually take the anti Israel stance it typically does. In doing so it could correct its bias towards Israel and have objective journalism.

Hari is merely another reason for a miracle of anti-Semitism forming cancer genes.

    Drug use

In August 1998, Johann Hari started to take Seroxat, an SSRI antidepressant. In August 2003 he published an article in the Independent[45] on the five-year anniversary, in which he wrote “Many people do have problems coming off the drug, but since I never intend to come off (and I think any depressive who tries is crazy), why should that bother me? Dependency in itself is not a problem.”

In May 2002, when he had been using SSRI antidepressants for over three years, Johann Hari published an article in The Evening Standard[46] in which he described regularly taking Ecstasy on a weekly basis, and the effect it had on him.

In January 2009, Johann Hari published an article in the Huffington Post in which he admitted to using Provigil[47], though no more than two or three a month: in the article he describes his past use of antidepressants.
