Israel in Secret Talks With Syrian Rebels?January 1, 2013 14:12 by Pesach Benson
• Times of Israel: The PA took exception to Shimon Peres’ comments about engaging Hamas.
“He’s meddling in Palestinian politics and deciding who can and who can’t be a party to talks,” said Saeb Erekat, the chief PA negotiator. Peres had said on Monday that Israel should negotiate with Hamas, provided that the Islamist rulers of the Gaza Strip meet certain conditions.
Tony Karon of Time tweeted a different take on Peres:
• NY Times bureau chief Jodi Rudoren pounded the pavement in Rishon LeZion talking to locals about “the matzav.”
• A Reuters cameraman was shot in the leg while filming in Aleppo. YNet says Ayman al-Sahili, a Libyan national, was evacuated to Turkey and his life is not in danger.
• The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reports 39,520 Syrians killed in 2012.
