Toulouse Tragedy & Aftermath
• The four Israeli victims of the Toulouse massacre: Rabbi Yonatan Sandler, his sons Aryeh and Gavriel, and Miriam Monsonego, were laid to rest in Jerusalem today.
• World riveted by Muhammed Merah’s standoff with French police. The Guardian and the Daily Telegraph are liveblogging from Toulouse.
• A reader’s email perfectly captured my headspace this morning: Toulouse, Twitter and the Media Incitement Factor.
• AFP: The EU issued an amended transcript of Catherine Ashton’s speech, which equated the Jews killed in Toulouse with Gaza kids.
The new transcript of Catherine Ashton’s remarks mentions the situation of children in both Gaza and the southern Israeli town of Sderot after the first version only mentioned the Palestinian territory.
A video of her speech Monday showed she indeed mentioned Sderot, a town often hit by Palestinian rocket attacks.
How nice of the EU to correct the record. Problem is, Israel’s outrage is about the moral equivalence Ashton drew, not about dropping names. As The Commentator points out:
There has not been one single instance, ever, of the Israeli military deliberately targeting Palestinian children in a school in Gaza.

Nobody ever tells the truth. The Koran was not written by Mohammed. Mohammed capture a Jewish Rabbi and a Catholic Priest and made them write the Koran, because Mohammed was a criminal and had a limited education. After the two men developed the Koran as forced. Then Mohammed had them dumped down a well and killed them both. That’s how the Koran was written and I can direct to the truth.

I much appreciate IDS and Honest Reporting bringing us news of these and other events but I think caution should be exercised in using the word “massacre”.

At what point “a number” becomes “large” or “a mass” has not been generally defined, and the word “shootings” alone does not convey the thinking that fuelled Mohammed Merah in his killing first the three paratroopers, then the rabbi and three schoolchildren; but while Mohammed Merah’s ‘revenge attacks’ demonstrates the ‘us and them’ thinking typical of massacres, I think that using the word “massacre” in describing this tragedy is not appropriate…and, in the wider world, such use may inadvertently foster or appear to support moral conditions for its future misleading misuse by those who wish to arouse or fan animosity, hate and vengeance in others…
