What Tourists Fear
November 5, 2003 12:15 by ManagingTeamWhy are less people coming to visit Israel these days? They’re afraid of getting attacked by Palestinian terrorists, of course.
The UK’s Independent manages to twist even this fact around:
The costly military response [to Palestinian terror], led by the Prime Minister, Ariel Sharon, has severely damaged tourism and investment in Israel.
The IDF, the Independent suggests, is more responsible for the drop in Israeli tourism than are Hamas and Islamic Jihad!

To The Editor:
Justin Huggler’s November 5th article titled “Israel destroys US-built wells” is typical of the bias that permeates reporting in The Independent. What does the last sentence of the article, “ The costly military response, led by the Prime Minister, Ariel Sharon, has severely damaged tourism and investment in Israel” have to do with the issue reported? Is Mr. Huggler not able to resist the opportunity to take a senseless jab at Israel? Blaming the damage done to Israel’s tourism industry and to foreign investment on Israel’s military response to terrorism is ridiculous. Israel has to use military force, at great expense to its economy, in protection of its country and its citizens. How can one possibly deny the fact that the decline in tourism is due to fear of terrorist acts. Is a country that is exercising their right of self-defense against terrorism to blame for the decline in the tourism industry and foreign investment?
