Aussie Editor Apologizes for Apartheid Headline

May 13, 2012 10:39 by

HonestReporting critiqued a particularly nasty piece of journalism in The Australian. While the newspaper hasn’t addressed the one-sided contents of the article itself, the editor has, at least, apologized for the appalling headline that originally appeared.

JTA reports:

The editor of the Weekend Australian newspaper apologized to the Jewish community for a headline that accused Israel of “cruel apartheid.”

Nick Cater, editor of the Australian broadsheet, said this week that the headline to a story in the May 5 issue — titled “Living under the cloud of Israel’s cruel apartheid” — should not have been published.

Cater told the Australian Jewish News that the incident was “deeply embarrassing” because of the “offensive nature” of the words used in the headline.

The Weekend editor apologised presumably for something he allowed the previous week back. This paper is generally careful with it’s articles. I’d say someone sneaked that heading into that edition without the editor’s knowledge. I’m not surprised at Australian journalists being sucked into that cesspit tho. Sorry from Australia

Do you really believe what you wrote?

Someone at the paper must know who handed in the article. Or are all of the handlers blind?

The editors must read their own paper after it’s published – and the retraction should have been immediate and heads rolling out the door!

If Israel is accountable for every fart in the wind, why are no others’ farts!!!

Or do you believe Hitler didn’t do anything wrong? Or that priests never molested children!

Once the words go out, they cannot be retracted.

There are more people who will have had their fires stoked on even more anti-Semitism, ignoring the apology.

    The hatred never ends.

Its high time Journalists should be licensed. Not just like lawyers and doctors, but as some one entrusted with Nuclear bombs. And it should be viewed as a means of protection of free speech. Because we do not have free speech without it. And it should be made retrospective – so today’s crimos won’t feel they can get away with anything.

I stopped reading this newspaper many years ago because there were a couple of articles, on subjects I was aware of, that were not entirely accurate. I am not surprised by their approach nor by the fact they apologised because it was of “an offensive nature” not because it was incorrect.

Hardcopy newspapers are under the financial hammer all over the world. Some of it has to do with the Internet but a lot is because of their journalists’ and editors’ dishonest approach to the news. The public is not fooled that easily. Journalistic standards have deteriorated markedly and except in a minority of cases of ingrained antisemitism and bias among the reading public much of what is printed is discounted by the very large silent majority. Journalists should not cry foul when their intellectual dishonesty is exposed. More strength to Honest Reporting.

The trouble with these apologies is that the damage is already done, the agenda has been fulfilled. The “journalists” apologize and so what? And who hears about these apologies.

What needs to happens utter humiliation and derision from peers (which will never happen) and their employers should punish them publicly. This is all so sick and so twisted and so wrong.

the “journalist” didn’t apologise. he believes every word he writes, and is allowed to write, all in the name of freedom of speech. Israel is the only country in the area which permits him that priviledge. the irony is overwhelming.

Ironic, yes. Which continues to remind me that anti-Semitic Christians pray to Jesus (an orthodox Jew for his entire life and on the cross) and Muslims believe the same orthodox Jew to be a major prophet.

Both Christianity and Islam use the Hebrew bible as the base for their own religions.

All anti-Semites should renounce all gifts given to them and the world by Jews and Israel.

That might include Jesus, of course, but certainly the Hebrew bible and it’s laws on ethics and how to treat all peoples. The 10 Commandments (Statements) are a small part of the entire 613 Commandments given to Jews; non-Jews get 7 which they can’t handle.

In the world’s total population, taking away zeros not necessary for visual sight:

7,000,000,000 billion people with a breakdown as:

        6,987 non-Jews
        13 Jews

Looks to me like a lot of bullies in the non-Jewish population!!

Seems to me to be NOT what G-d wants for His People.

It has gotten to the point that the worst Jews haters are now spewing garbage about Jesus, namely that he was not Jewish. It never ceases to amaze me how these morons can write this tripe and expect anyone with a sane brain to swallow it. They want to strip anything Jewish from the Jews. The most pathetic of losers need to remember that not only was Jesus a Jewish man, but a rabbi to boot.

You see, Israel and the Jews will never again be defeated militarily, certainly not by any islamic shit holes so the only thing left is to attempt to murder the Jews and Israel in the media. Those losers spew their mantras of lies about Jews and Israel, loud and long, but that does not mean that the lies will become truth nor that most of the world goes along with them.

As I was growing up it was shocking to me that Christians said Jesus was not a Jew. But as a child I knew better.

The anti-Semitism spewed at us Jewish kids by Christian adults and their children was sad, especially when my retort was always: Why do you call me ‘dirty Jew’ when you pray to a Jew!

I also reminded Jewish adults that ‘The Last Supper’ was Passover (Pesach) Seder.

People also forget or never knew that the first Palestinians were Jews.

I’m concerned about what is being taught in churches – a friend told me “Jesus spoke English…” which she honestly believes. But she also believes there is no anti-Semitism, even in her church, which she believes to be the ‘only true religion.’

Do not be mislead that this admission is meaningless. The NY Times, Guardian and now the BBC are far from apologizing, and the BBC is even doubling down and admits its reporters are intimidated by Islamists and their reporting is influenced accordingly, do they apologize. Today news agencies are crediting themselves for misreporting the news to gain traction with extremists. I applaud the Australian news editor for both the admission but more importantly his apology.

I find it hard to believe that newspapers are afraid of Islamists who are ‘forcing’ journalists to write anti-Semitic, anti-Israel rhetoric. This seems like a cop-out from editors who are anti-Semitic themselves. It seems to me more likely that the journos, who have long tended to be left-wing/anti-Israel, are looking for an excuse for their obvious anti-Israel writings – although I’m willing to be corrected.
And it’s a bit late for the Australian editor to apologise after the damage is done – surely he should have been more vigilant about what was going into his paper…. hence I don’t really believe his apology is genuine – he was just lucky he’s in a position to feign shock-horror and make himself look lily white.
Do I sound tough? Yeah well I’m sick of all these anti-Semitic types having their say against Israel without having the decency to listen to the truth which, even if they did listen, they wouldn’t believe and wouldn’t print anyway.

May I also draw your attention to a recent remark by Greg Sheridan, foreign editor of The Australian, and a true friend of both Israel and America. This remark took the form of a postscript within Sheridan’s regular Thursday opinion column (“EU piggies won’t go to market”, May 10), available online [subscriber login required for full-article access]:

    http://www.theaustralian.com.au/news/opinion/columnists/greg-sheridan

For the benefit of non-subscribers, here is the postscript in full:

“Many readers were surprised, as I was, to read a headline in The Weekend Australian: ‘Living under the cloud of Israel’s cruel apartheid’. The headline did an injustice to the story, which only used the word ‘apartheid’ in reporting the comments of one person who was interviewed. The editor of this august journal has confirmed to me that the headline was a mistake, the sort that creeps into newspapers where staff are always battling the pressure of deadlines. The Australian believes, and certainly I personally believe, the word ‘apartheid’ has no application to Israel, which is a democracy in good standing, which extends basic rights to all its citizens, whatever their race or creed. Too often the misuse of such a word is designed to demonise Israel, wholly unjustly. In this case, it was just a mistake.”

As an HR supporter and avid reader of The Australian, I believe the apology deserves to be accepted at face value.

According to the bible, the book supposedely followed by Christians, Israel is the hope of salvation to the whole world. God promised the earth will be filled with His Glory and that Jerusalem will be the centre of world worship, with the Lord Jesus Christ ruling from the Temple reestablished in Jerusalem (the New Jerusalem). The Lord jesus Christ is the promised seed (descendant) of Abraham, Abraham is the Father of the Jewish Nation.True Christians are followers of Christ and all his teachings, to deny Jesus’ Jewishness is to put yourself outside of the promised blessings of Abraham and therefore you are not a true Christian. Gentile believers became spiritual seed of Abraham when they accepted Christ.
To deny Jesus’ Jewishness is denying God’s purpose with the earth – that is not true Christianity. “He who blesses Israel will be blessed and he who curses Israel will be cursed.” Many so called Christians are in for a big shock. They are going to find they are condemned of God.

Christians do NOT have the right to tell anyone else how to believe. Period. I guess they just refuse to let go – they certainly murdered enough Jews who refused to convert.

Jews believe in one G-d – just as He said – there is but One and He said to have no others!! Jesus was not and will not ever be a god, except in the way the politics of the Christians have forced that on followers.

Please stop trying to deny the Jewish faith.

We will all die – and there is no proof of any afterlife or G-d. My faith is there is – and it includes ONLY One G-d, the Almighty Lord. No person was or is Him.

I visit Israel a few times a year for family gatherings, however, I’m an American, and am a secular, though cultural, Jewish guy. I am not a religion-based Zionist in any way.. I stay their for a few weeks at a time every time I visit.

I do however have a good (international) understanding of what the word “Sovereign” means when talking about the rights of countries to defend themselves against any and all threats to it’s people and it’s land. With that in mind, I am also very aware of, and familiar with the rights of individuals and cultures to maintain their continuity of both personal and cultural freedoms.

In addition, I visited all the “non-tourist” places that people really aren’t interested in, I’m talking about walking around regular neighborhoods poor ones, regular ones and everything in-between including all the non-Jewish neighborhoods and areas, including “the border”, and have even strayed outside the “borders”, one place for instance, is Nazareth, which is a solid Muslim community.

Believe me, if there was any kind of “apartheid” I’d be the FIRST ONE to speak up against it no matter WHAT country is involved. But there simply is NO APARTHEID. PERIOD. Everyone is treated equally, because it’s THE ONLY TRUE DEMOCRACY IN THE MIDDLE EAST (Of course! It’s run by Jews! What else would it be! Heh heh).

Israel doesn’t do ANYTHING to deserve the violent treatments(s) it receives. It DESERVES respect and reverence NOT violent attempts at overthrow from a relgion that wants to convert the PLANET to an all-Muslim one (I’m talking only about Radical Islam) I believe that Israel, being the very, very special sovereign nation that it is (and even if it wasn’t so special), it has and will ALWAYS have the right to hunt down, capture, and kill any and all adversaries that are involved in violence against it’s people and land. Quite frankly, I believe that all individuals that decide to NOT protest peacefully but instead choose to do violence against Israel FOR ANY REASON should be hunted down and exterminated like the low-life, fanatic, psychotic, criminal animals that they really are. Violence against a country is an act of WAR. Israel remains at war. And I want Israel TO WIN. So should YOU.

Although it was an apology and was done in the right spirit , I can see how it has little impact. There is no tone of remorse for he did. If he had said I realize that in looking at Israel’s record of dealing with prisoners of war and handling terrorist threats , that I was wrong, it would have made more of an impact.

The Australian and its sister News publications have a long history of support for Israel, and seeing things clearly instead of being blinded by leftist and Islamist ideology. I can only suggest that the reporter in question has come from a brainwashed background and the headline slipped through somehow. I would take the apology from The Australian as one from a true friend and work to make relations between the paper and the Jewish community even stronger than they are.

Don’t bother trying to explain … if, after over 2,000 years, Christians don’t know the truth, they either don’t want to know or refuse to believe that the person to whom they pray was:

      a Jew,
      an orthodox rabbi,
a man who surrounded himself with men,
a person who lived and died a Jew,
      not G-d,
a believer of the laws and 613 Commandments in the Jewish bible,
and would be appalled at how his name and his words are used by non-Jews to say he’s G-d, which he knew to be against G-d’s words!!

Not all rabbis have one job … they have more than one, if not working in a synagogue.

As Jesus had more than one job – and few even knew who he was!!

      Just like today!!

Some rabbis are chaplains in the military – and also soldiers out on the fields of war!!

Lots of non-Jewish clergy have jobs outside of their churches … my friend’s husband mows lawns and in the winter does snow blowing/shoveling.
