Motaz Azaiza was turned into a global symbol: a Gazan photojournalist embraced by Western media, celebrities, influencers, and politicians as a trusted voice from the war.

But his own words tell a very different story.

By his account, Azaiza was already out with his camera at 6:30 a.m. on October 7, as Hamas terrorists were invading Israel. He later filmed Israeli hostages being beaten in Gaza and chose not to publish the footage because he feared Israel could identify the Palestinians attacking them.

That is not journalism. That is protection for the mob.

Azaiza has also described Israeli hostages as “prisoners,” claimed released captives looked “fat, smiling, and in good health,” used ambulances in Gaza as personal transportation, backed a campaign to free convicted murderer Marwan Barghouti, and admitted that Gaza’s media ecosystem was shaped by a Hamas-run WhatsApp group.

These are not rumors. They are his own posts, interviews, and words.

Western audiences were sold the image of a brave photojournalist. The receipts show something far darker: a man who withheld evidence of hostage abuse, minimized Israeli suffering, and operated inside a media environment shaped by Hamas.

The question is not just who Motaz Azaiza is.

It is why so many people were so eager to look away.
