We wish Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt a hearty mazal tov on their recent wedding. Jolie has, at times, been estranged from her father, actor Jon Voight. According to reports, Voight was “not invited” to the private ceremony in France.
What has this got to do with Israel? Absolutely nothing of course.
But this did not stop The Independent from attempting to add an Israel angle to the story with this headline? (retrieved from cache):
So the headline implies that Voight was not welcome due to his pro-Israel views. This, despite a sentence in the article itself stating that neither Jolie nor Pitt have ever made their views on Israel publicly known.
The headline was later amended and “pro-Israel” removed but a considerable chunk of the story is still dedicated to Voight’s advocacy on behalf of Israel even though it has nothing whatsoever to do with his personal relationship with his daughter and now son-in-law.
And just in case there is any doubt that The Independent has consciously decided to promote a paparazzi celebrity story by attaching Israel to it, this is how it was posted on The Independent’s Facebook page:
That The Independent changed its headline is indicative that it did not take long for the paper to realize just how inappropriate it was. But it appears that for some obsessives in the UK media, supporting Israel is grounds enough to be treated as a pariah. Enough even to be denied an invite to your own daughter’s wedding.
