Nissan’s Driving App Can’t Find Israel

An HonestReporting fan (and enthusiastic Nissan owner) discovered that his NissanConnect mobile application does not include Israel on its list of countries.

This is a strange development, because Nissan cars are highly popular in Israel, where they have been sold since 1991.

Nissan’s web site includes Israel, and Israel’s relations with Japan, the company’s home country, are generally quite positive.

So what’s with Nissan’s maps?

A closer examination of NissanConnect shows that this particular app made its way to Israel via a Nissan affiliated company called “Nissan Middle East” which is located in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. Though Israel has a diplomatic mission in the UAE related to renewable energy projects, the countries do not have diplomatic relations and the UAE does not officially acknowledge that Israel exists.

Nissan’s headquarters in Japan may not even realize that its local Middle East distributor has decided to erase one of its most enthusiastic markets from its own mobile app.
