As for myself, I remember too well the events surrounding the Six-Day War. I was 17 years old, living in central London with my parents, and every shul (synagogue) in the area had fund raising events.
The one that sticks in my memory more than all the others was a fund raiser at St John’s Wood, where there was an eminent speaker (don’t remember who), and after he finished speaking buckets were going around, and the gentlemen present emptied their pockets and wallets, as did the ladies, and some even removed their jewelry. A fortune in cash was counted from the buckets, and I’m sure a further fortune raised from the sale of the jewelry.
This was only one such evening, there were plenty, and remember it so clearly as I was one of the bucket holders.
