New York congressional candidate Brad Lander recently traveled to the West Bank to join Palestinian olive harvesters, where he reported being detained by Israeli soldiers.

Lander described the incident on social media, accusing Israel of “state-sponsored ethnic cleansing” and highlighting concerns about settler violence and Palestinian detentions.

But the Israeli military offered a different account.

According to the IDF, the visit had not been coordinated in advance, despite approximately 100 other olive harvests having taken place with military coordination. The army also stated that those detained were provided food and drinks, and most were subsequently released.

Lander participated in the harvest through Protect the Harvest, an initiative that encourages international activists to accompany Palestinian farmers and raise awareness of their experiences in the West Bank.

While Lander’s account focused on Palestinian grievances, it gave considerably less attention to Israeli security concerns, including the threat of Palestinian terrorism in the West Bank.

The incident illustrates how competing accounts of events in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict can shape public understanding.

For audiences to evaluate what happened, reporting should present both the allegations and the relevant security considerations, rather than relying on one account alone.
