It was only a matter of time before one of the British newspapers spun the James Miller affair out of proportion. This leader in The Independent concludes:
On the contrary, by turning the spotlight on to these incidents, we may help to curb a lawless and trigger-happy tendency among Israeli soldiers. This can only be of some good to the unhappy citizens of the Occupied Territories, and, ultimately, to Israel itself.
James Miller’s death is indeed sad and Israel expressed its regret over the affair. However, this editorial doesn’t acknowledge the fact that Miller, like any other journalist, assumes certain risks when entering a combat zone. And despite The Independent’s own spin-happy tendency, the whole reason the incident made news is that it isn’t the norm and doesn’t represent the IDF.
