It isn’t often a headline can be botched on so many levels, but one British paper managed to do just that. This weekend’s bungled headline award goes to The Independent:

Secret memo shows Israel knew Six Day War was illegal

A) You have to read the article to find out that the secret memo in question only discusses the legality of Israeli settlements, not the war itself.

B) You have to read well into Donald Macintyre’s report to find out that the memo was discovered a year ago.

C) You have to read other sites for a better understanding of why the memo in question was so hotly disputed. See these links: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, and this last one in pdf format.

D) Last but not least, you have to read The Independent’s print version to see a completely different headline.
