Channel 4’s news show, Dispatches, is in some hot water over two separate documentaries about Islamic extremism in the UK.
First, a January undercover investigation of mosques is now being investigated by police and a formal complaint has been submitted to Ofcom accusing Dispatches of irresponsible editing and splicing of footage, quoting people out context. The Times of London writes:
West Midlands Police said that its inquiry had at first looked at whether there had been any criminal offences committed by three people featured in the programme.
After extensive investigation of the footage, however, detectives then extended their inquiries to the way the film had been edited.
Harry’s Place calls on Channel 4 to release full unedited tapes of the sermons in question.
Police are also investigating this week’s episode. One speaker, identified only as Abu Mohammed and banned from entering the UK, justified London’s 7/7 terror attacks. Police said they are investigating to see if any laws have been broken. Officers have requested Channel 4 to hand over untransmitted footage from the show, but the station says it won’t comply without a court order.
