In December, massive Israeli aid to tsunami victims was largely ignored by the western press. A dispatch from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs indicates a new round of aid to the recent flood victims in India:
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Health, the Chief Medical Officer, Latet (“To Give”) Organization, Teva Pharmaceuticals, and Rafa Laboratories have offered assistance to the flood victims in Maharashtra, India, and are sending antibiotics and first aid equipment to the stricken region.
The Deputy Director General for Asia and the Pacific at the Foreign Ministry, Mr. Amos Nadai, commented on the response of Israeli companies: “The sincere response of non-profit organizations and private companies in Israel demonstrates the affinity that Israelis feel towards the citizens of India. The generous contributions coordinated by the Foreign Ministry will be of great assistance to the flood victims in western India, and will contribute also to the already warm relations between our two countries.”
The total aid package, estimated at NIS220 thousand, includes:
– Pramine tablets against nausea and vomiting (Rafa Laboratories)
– Ciproflozacin (Perrigo Israel Pharmaceuticals Ltd.)
– Pain medication for children and adults (Teva Pharmaceuticals Ltd.). Teva also organized the shipment.
– Antibiotics (Chief Medical Officer, and Latet)
– First aid kits, penicillin, Rafapen, and other antibiotics (Health Ministry, with the help of the Foreign Ministry)The aid is in answer to the appeal by the Maharashtra Government, following the floods that struck the region, claiming more than a thousand lives and leaving thousands more homeless.
All of the medicines and equipment were flown by El-Al on Monday, 8 August, directly to Bombay, capital of Maharashtra, and were expected to arrive at their destination by evening.
