Nice report in the Baltimore Sun about Israel’s oldest kibbutz, Deganya-A, going capitalist. This is the kind of interesting, well-rounded report we’re going to miss as US papers cut back on foreign bureaus:
By an overwhelming majority, kibbutz members voted to shed their socialist, utopian aspirations in favor of a new free market system that empowers the individual, puts more money in members’ pockets and, sadly for some, turns their once-unique community into a place much like the rest of the world.
Parachute journalism will never produce an article like John Murphy’s dispatch. We’re watching the end of an era at both Deganya and foreign journalism
