The Boston Herald misrepresented the recent resignation of Natan Sharansky (pictured) from the Israeli cabinet, claiming that former dissident and author of The Case for Democracy has a double standard when it comes to democracy in Gaza. Said Herald editors:
How very sad that this scholar, who has given a voice to those who long for democracy through years of tyranny, cannot see its potential among the million Palestinians who currently live in Gaza. When it comes to promoting democracy, there can be no double standard.
But a look at Sharansky’s resignation letter indicates that he by no means denies Gaza’s potential for viable democracy — but rather that Israel shouldn’t leave until that process is more advanced.
