ABC News Must Correct Its Hamas-Affiliated Coverage
ABC News must correct the record.
In a recent report, ABC News aired an interview with Mahmoud Bassal. What ABC News failed to disclose is that Bassal is an active Hamas operative, serving in the Zeitoun Battalion of Hamas’ military wing, the Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades, as well as a spokesperson for the Hamas-controlled Gaza Civil Defense.
This is not a small oversight. In Gaza, every public institution – including the Civil Defense, health ministry, and media outlets – operates under direct Hamas supervision. Their messaging is coordinated to advance Hamas’ political and military objectives.
By presenting Bassal as a neutral civilian source, ABC News amplified Hamas propaganda and misled viewers. The omission of his terrorist affiliation undermines journalistic integrity and erases the distinction between civilians and members of a terrorist organization.
We, the undersigned, call on ABC News to take immediate action by either:

Removing the interview featuring Mahmoud Bassal, or

Issuing a public clarification acknowledging Bassal’s Hamas affiliations and explaining their relevance to the story.
Western media has a moral and professional obligation to ensure transparency and accuracy, especially when reporting on conflict and terrorism. Viewers deserve to know when the voices being platformed are tied to designated terrorist groups. ABC News must uphold the principles of responsible journalism and ensure that its reporting does not become a tool for Hamas propaganda.
