The Gaza You Don’t See in the Headlines

Gaza is usually shown to the world through one image: rubble, hunger, and total collapse.

But the footage Gazans themselves post tells a more complicated story.

The script points to cafes, shops, swimming pools, wedding venues, restaurants, night markets, a men’s spa, and even nightlife operating in Gaza during wartime. It also highlights a new restaurant, one of many said to have opened in recent years, raising obvious questions about money, supplies, workers, and customer demand.

None of this erases the destruction in Gaza or the suffering of civilians. It does not mean everyone in Gaza is living comfortably. The script explicitly notes that Gaza has serious economic disparities.

But it does challenge the one-dimensional story audiences are often given.

If commercial life is continuing, if markets are filled with produce, if new businesses are opening, and if some Gazans can spend money on wedding venues while others struggle for basic necessities, then the conversation should include harder questions: Who has access to resources? Who controls them? And why do so many media reports leave that part out?

The issue is not whether Gaza has suffered. It has.

The issue is why international coverage so often shows only one version of Gaza, while ignoring the evidence that civilian and commercial life continues in ways that complicate the narrative.
