An article in The Independent marking the milestone of Benjamin Netanyahu becoming the longest serving prime minister in Israel’s history included the following paragraph:

Either the writer or an editor evidently misunderstood the quote from Israeli journalist Anshel Pfeffer, adding “[with]” to the sentence.

Pfeffer rightly referred to Israeli air strikes on Syria, which included hitting Russian-made weapons systems that had been supplied to the Syrian regime.

The square brackets, however, entirely changed the meaning to state that Israel had used Russian supplied weapons to attack Syria, which is patently not the case. The vast majority of Israeli arms are either US-made or domestically produced.

After HonestReporting alerted The Independent to the error, the square brackets were removed and Pfeffer’s original and correct sentence restored.
