Violence spread to a second refugee camp in Lebanon. Skirmishes broke out at Ain al Hilwe between the Lebanese army and a group called Jund al-Sham. The Washington Post sheds light on this group:
The insurgents at Ein al-Hilweh, by contrast, are considered by many to be more ragtag outlaws than Islamic fighters driven by ideology. The group, Jund al-Sham, is mostly Lebanese but has strong links to neighboring Syria.
The UNRWA already admitted that it knew for months about Fatah al-Islam’s infiltration of Nahr el-Bared refugee camp and did nothing. Odds are they knew about Ain al-Hilwe too. The UN agency runs 58 refugee camps throughout the Mideast, including one in Jenin. Anything going on at the other camps we should know about?
UPDATE June 4: Meanwhile, The Guardian reports Lebanese allegations that Fatah al-Islam is using human shields. Deja vu all over again. Let’s see how much the Lebanese army cares this time around.
