The New York Times has reported that the German Parliament has criminalized the burning of foreign flags.
The issue was put to the vote in response to the burning of an Israeli flag at a demonstration in 2017. Now, the majority of parliamentarians have made clear that while a nation’s own flag may be the subject of protest, burning another country’s flag constitutes an uncivil act of hatred that cannot be tolerated.
The Israeli flag has been burned in many anti-Israel protests around the world, something that has been a source of concern for Jews experiencing antisemitism.
