It’s been a big month for HonestReporting, with trips, events and appearances.

In October, HR’s CEO Joe Hyams took HonestReporting on the road, discussing news literacy in the age of social media and concerns for fake news, with supporters and new audiences in New York, Boston and Montreal.

At the Merrick Jewish Centre, Congregation Ohr Torah, Rabbi Charles Klein introduced HonestReporting: as “leaders in the information battle that takes place every day, in print, on air and online.” Rabbi Klein will be leading an MJC Mission to Israel in celebration of Israel’s 70th birthday, and Joe pointed to exciting online resources provided by HonestReporting to help lend context and insight ahead of the trip.

Special thanks to Joan and Blaine Land, participants on HonestReporting’s 2017 Six-Day War anniversary Mission, who helped the MJC Mission take shape. Joan and Blaine’s passion and enthusiasm connected HonestReporting with this proud and engaged community evening for Israel.

At the Boston headquarters of the IAC (the Israeli American Council), Joe opened a six part lecture series offered by Hakol: An Israel Leadership Program – and hosted by CJP’s Strategic Israel Engagement Team.

Joe spoke on the topic of “Misleading Headlines – how bias can be identified and how it affects the Israel dialogue,” which generated not only great interest, but also an invitation to brief some of the participants prior to their upcoming Israel tour (…and of course we’ll be happy to help!).

Thanks to Aviva Klompas, and to Yael Stern for inviting HonestReporting to contribute to this outstanding initiative.

In Boston, Joe was hosted by Daniel Seligson of CJP: the Combined Jewish Philanthropies for their Israel360 podcast, talking all things newsy: including questions of distinction between fake news vs. news we just don’t like. Is anti-Israel media bias part of that same conversation, or something else entirely? Or both?

From there, Joe headed over to Montreal where he was hosted by Rabbi Freundlich of Congregation Tifereth Beth David Jerusalem for a night of insight and discussion on media bias, and how we can each play a role in identifying and pushing back against journalistic failures.

Meanwhile, back in Israel, HonestReporting co-sponsored, and HR Managing Editor Simon Plosker introduced, a lively panel discussion on European left-wing anti-Semitism. This brief excerpt was shot in lower cellphone quality resolution, but the high quality official video will be coming soon!

Some of the high powered guests on the panel included former MK Dr. Einat Wilf, Jewish Agency spokesperson Avi Mayer, Dr. Michal Hatuel-Radoshitzky of the INSS, and author Dr. David Hirsh from Goldsmiths, University London, who introduced his new book: Contemporary Left Anti-Semitism. The evening was organized by Dr. David Gurevich, founder of Ambassadors Online (University of Haifa). Audience members hailed from Israel, the US and Europe.

It is truly remarkable how much each person can do for Israel. When people care deeply about fair and accurate news coverage, just a small investment of time and effort can yield big results!
