Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has warned that it could take up to a year for Israel to exit completely from the current nationwide coronavirus-related lockdown. His comments came as the Health Ministry on Thursday morning announced that a record-high number of 8,919 new COVID-19 cases were registered over the previous 24 hours.
The shutdown was imposed on Sept. 18 and meant to run until Oct. 11. However, government ministers overnight agreed to extend the harsh restrictions for three additional days, at which point another vote will take place on the matter.
During a session of the so-called coronavirus cabinet, Netanyahu emphasized that this time around the reopening of Israel’s economy would be gradual.
Overall, the Jewish state has confirmed just under 250,000 infections. Of the 68,811 active cases, the number of people in serious condition stands at 810, with 206 on ventilators.
All of this, meanwhile, comes on the backdrop of reports that Israel’s coronavirus czar, Prof. Ronni Gamzu, is contemplating stepping down due to ongoing major disagreements with Netanyahu on how to best tackle the pandemic.

Israel has delivered the first of two Iron Dome anti-missile defense batteries to the United States. In 2019, Israel’s Defense Ministry and the US Defense Department signed a $300 million deal for two of the systems to be integrated into the US Army. The second battery is slated for delivery in the coming weeks.
“I am proud that this advanced system will protect US Army soldiers as well,” Israel’s Defense Minister and Alternate Prime Minister Benny Gantz said at an event marking the milestone. “The completion of this agreement serves as further proof that the defense alliance [between the US and Israel] is based on common values and interests, which are stronger than ever,” he added.
Iron Dome became operational in Israel in 2011 and has since successfully intercepted over 2,400 incoming projectiles.
Antisemitism Watch: Israel’s Diaspora Affairs Minister, Omer Yankelevitch, has urged Amazon founder and CEO Jeff Bezos to remove from the retail giant’s platform books containing antisemitic content.
“We demand Amazon instate an official policy barring the sale of antisemitic titles that promote Holocaust denial and hatred of Jews,” Yankelevitch wrote in a letter to Bezos.
The appeal comes in the wake by a study by the ministry that found that Amazon is currently selling 40 books with antisemitic content, each of which has sold thousands of copies.
