Iran has agreed in principle to grant international inspectors access to two sites where the country is suspected of having conducted undeclared nuclear activities. One of the facilities is reportedly in Abadeh, south of Isfahan, and was exposed in September 2019 by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

The Israeli leader said at the time that Tehran had tried to destroy the installation in order to hide evidence.

“We’re revealing yet another secret nuclear site… [outlined] in the archives that [the Mossad] brought from Tehran,” Netanyahu asserted. “In this site, Iran conducted experiments to develop nuclear weapons.”

Following this week’s conflagration with Hezbollah, Israeli Ambassador to the UN Gilad Erdan submitted a letter to the Security Council demanding that immediate action be taken against the Lebanese government and that changes be made to the mandate of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL).

UNIFIL is tasked with ensuring that southern Lebanon remains demilitarized, although Jerusalem has long accused the body of failing to fulfill its obligations.

Erdan said that, “the recent attack at IDF forces, in addition to Hezbollah’s increasing strength and its activities in southern Lebanon, increases the chances for escalation in the northern arena which could have severe consequences…for the entire region.”

The UN envoy also presented a photograph showing the area from where Hezbollah’s operatives opened fire on Israeli troops.

Foreign Minister Gabi Ashkenazi arrived in Berlin on his first official visit overseas. The top Israeli diplomat met with German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, whom he thanked for Germany’s decision to designate Hezbollah’s “political wing” as a terrorist organization. On the other hand, many European countries continue to bifurcate between Hezbollah’s “military wing,” which they have officially blacklisted, and the Iranian proxy’s “other” activities.

Ashkenazi also updated Steinmeier on Israel’s normalization agreement with the United Arab Emirates, while imploring the German head of state to prevent the United Nations’ arms embargo on Tehran from expiring in October.
