Mamdani’s Repeated Attacks on pro-Israel Americans

During a Thursday campaign rally, New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani described AIPAC and the American pro-Israel community as “monsters,” people so far beyond the pale that their principle interests were in undermining American democracy and perpetuating “genocide.” 

While this may have looked like an off-the-cuff remark to hype up a political rally, Mayor Mamdani’s use of a teleprompter indicated that his remarks were pre-written. He had planned ahead of time to use his powerful platform to single out and demonize a particular group of Americans. Pro-Israel Americans were targeted by the mayor of New York for exercising their First Amendment rights, despite acting no different than hundreds of other interest groups.

At a subsequent Monday press conference, Mayor Mamdani was asked to clarify his comments, as they had been seen by many in the Jewish community as invoking classic antisemitic tropes about the uniquely malicious political influence of Jews. Mayor Mamdani instead doubled down on his previous statements, once again using a prepared text — suggesting that he had once again planned to single out and malign a particular group of his fellow citizens as “immoral”. 

As part of his prepared reply, Mayor Mamdani referenced the IDF’s killing of Al Jazeera journalist Ahmad Washah as recent evidence of Israel’s supposed crimes. However, long before Mamdani made his remarks, evidence had emerged supporting IDF claims that Washah was not an innocent journalist, but instead a Hamas sniper. Further analysis showed that his social circle included known Hamas and Islamic Jihad terrorists, that he was killed alongside Hamas terrorists, and that he was mourned as a “Mujaheed” by a local mosque. Mamdani did not share any of this vital context.

Mamdani rarely comments on tragedies in other parts of the world or actual massacres committed elsewhere. Yet as Mayor of New York city, a position with no actual foreign policy mandate, Mamdani has chosen to regularly weigh in on a single foreign policy issue. The type of rhetoric the Mayor used isn’t new, however the unique focus from the office he holds is an emerging and dangerous development. A particular foreign policy matter appears to have become the calculated focus of the Mayor of the largest city in the United States. 

What should be asked of Mamdani is why he believes a central pillar of his mayoral tenure should be demonizing a large portion of his own constituency as immoral “monsters” and enablers of genocide, while also giving a pass to perpetrators of actual massacres, crimes against humanity, and alleged terrorists such as Washah.
