Children played their part in keeping everyday life going during the emergency. When the postmen were called up by the army, the children took over delivering the mail.
Israel really hoped the war would not happen… from Independence Day onwards, the atmosphere tended to harden and trouble was felt to be imminent.
In the towns, one could see the signs of preparedness. Cellars were being emptied and organised as shelters. Old bedspreads and the like were thrown in the road – and a friend of mine even found a cat and six kittens in a corner of his cellar.
During the war, Egyptian propaganda from Cairo Radio was incessant. Stories were put out that Haifa was in flames and Tel Aviv bombed in an attempt to demoralize people.
