Spot the Difference: Same Story, Worse Headline

According to the IDF, Israeli soldiers secured the entry of Israeli police and a civilian to the West Bank village of Al-Mughayyir on Wednesday to facilitate the retrieval of livestock belonging to Israeli civilians that had been found in the area of the village.

Two Palestinians were killed after a violent confrontation broke out. The IDF has stated that its forces responded after coming under attack, and the incident is under investigation.

But look at how Reuters covered the story and then how The Independent republished it.

Reuters describes what happened as a “raid” by Israeli settlers and the IDF. Even that characterization is open to question. According to the stated purpose of the operation, Israeli police and a civilian entered the village to retrieve livestock, with soldiers present to provide security. Whatever followed, this was not presented as an operation intended to attack Palestinians.

Contrast that with The Independent.

Predictably, The Independent added the word “occupied” to its description of the West Bank. More significantly, however, it turned Reuters’ “raid” into an “attack.”

That is not a trivial change. An “attack” implies that the Israelis entered Al-Mughayyir with the purpose of carrying out violence. Yet that is not what the circumstances described in the report indicate. The Israelis entered to retrieve livestock, while the IDF says violence erupted only after its forces came under attack.

There have, sadly, been recent cases of deplorable violence by a minority of Israeli extremists in the West Bank. But that does not mean every incident involving Israeli civilians or security forces can simply be placed into the same narrative.

This is a telling example of how a wire-service headline can be subtly altered by another outlet in a way that changes the entire framing of a story.

In The Independent’s version, Israelis are no longer merely participants in an incident that turned violent. By substituting “attack” for “raid,” they are cast from the outset as the aggressors before readers have even reached the first paragraph.
