The Problem Has Always Been Iranian Behavior

If you follow HonestReporting’s X feed, you’ll see an ongoing thread on Iran’s and its proxies’ malicious behavior, day after day and week after week during the supposed ceasefire with the United States.

This should not surprise anyone who has followed Iran over the years. Their behavior, driven by an uncompromising ideology, has always been the driving force behind their confrontations with Israel, the United States and the West. The Islamic Republic has only been sanctioned, isolated and attacked because of their rhetoric and their actions. Had they not threatened Israel’s existence, while attacking multiple neighbors and developing a nuclear weapons program, they never would have suffered from sanctions or economic hardship, let alone the wars of the past two years.

Going back to the JCPOA, the argument that Israel, as well as others opposed to the JCPOA in the United States, took at the time was not that any deal with Iran was inherently bad. The case was that any deal with Iran should rely on a verifiable change in behavior, rather than empty and temporary promises from an unreliable and untrustworthy regime.

Unfortunately, most of this is unclear in the international press. The narrative that Israel and pro-Israel Americans want war with Iran is false. The desire is for a resolution that guarantees Iran cannot ever obtain a nuclear weapons capability and that they can no longer threaten the entire region. This is a desire for peace, not a desire for war.

The pathway to never-ending war is never-ending appeasement of a violent theocratic regime that has murdered more than 100,000 of its own people, according to President Trump, while attacking Israel, Jordan, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Bahrain, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates, and funding terrorist proxies in Gaza, Lebanon, Syria, Iraq and Yemen…and neither regional list is even complete, as anyone who experienced the AMIA bombings in Buenos Aires can attest.

Anyone who wants a more peaceful Middle East needs to insist on one thing: a complete change of Iranian behavior. Whether this regime is capable of such a change remains to be seen.
