Hamas gunmen forced their way into a Gazan World Food Programme food distribution site on Saturday, according to a Sunday statement by the Office of the United Nations Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process (UNSCO), part of a broader pattern of the Palestinian terrorist organization’s smuggling attempts and abuse of humanitarian operations.
Despite the increasingly widespread disruption of humanitarian aid by Hamas, the incident was attended by limited media coverage. The limited proliferation of the story comes despite extensive reporting refuting the IDF’s past warnings about Hamas looting of aid, and of allegations that Israel was interfering in the distribution of aid.
Hamas Gunmen Storm WFP Aid Site
“I strongly condemn the recent obstruction of humanitarian operations in Gaza by the de facto authorities, which endangered humanitarian personnel, intimidated workers delivering lifesaving food assistance and disrupted life-saving humanitarian operations,” UNSCO Special Coordinator Dr. Ramiz Alakbarov said in a statement. “Humanitarian workers were forced to halt food distributions after armed personnel affiliated with the de facto authorities forcibly entered the Abu Rashid food distribution point in Jabalia, North Gaza. The forces also entered a WFP warehouse and reportedly assaulted two truck drivers who were delivering humanitarian supplies.”
While Alakbarov did not explicitly name Hamas in the statement, the term “de facto authorities” is often used by UN bodies in references to the terrorist group.
The incident, according to the UNSCO coordinator, was not isolated, but instead reflected “increasingly dangerous pattern of intimidation, violence and obstruction, including smuggling attempts, targeting and abusing humanitarian operations.”
“They are placing humanitarian workers at risk, disrupting the delivery of life-saving assistance, and further constraining the ability of humanitarian organizations to operate at a time when civilians across Gaza continue to face immense and pressing humanitarian conditions,” said Alakbarov, who also noted tightening Israeli control of areas in Gaza. “Direct threats to staff, interference with humanitarian supplies, and the shrinking humanitarian operating space continue to jeopardize operational continuity.”
Hamas Claims Its Seizures Were Police Actions
The Government Media Office, a mouthpiece of Hamas, rejected Alakbarov’s allegations, claiming that they were police seeking to protect the Abu Rashid aid site. The gunmen ostensibly uncovered smuggling through the aid convoy, and seized items as evidence. A crowd reportedly had to be brought under control by the Hamas-affiliated gunmen, as supposedly some were attempting to exploit the chaos to steal cigarettes.
“Exaggerating a routine law enforcement incident while ignoring the blood of hundreds of his colleagues in humanitarian work constitutes an ethical and professional failure that cannot pass without accountability,” the GMO said in a Monday statement. “It reflects a policy of clear appeasement that is incompatible with the responsibilities and principles of the United Nations.”
The Hamas-controlled body demanded UNSCO retract its allegations, apologize for the “offense caused to the government,” and to redirect condemnation against Israel.
The Israeli Coordination of Government Activities in the Territories (COGAT) condemned Hamas’ actions in a Monday X post, agreeing with Alakbarov that the incident was part of a systemic issue.
“his constitutes further clear evidence that Hamas cynically exploits the humanitarian space and the aid intended for the residents of the Gaza Strip for its own purposes,” said COGAT. “The facts are clear: humanitarian aid is entering the Gaza Strip. Hamas is the party undermining the distribution mechanisms, seizing humanitarian aid, and preventing it from reaching the civilian population.”
Limited Coverage Despite Humanitarian Aid Salience
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) had previously warned of Hamas’ abuse of the humanitarian aid system during the October 7 War.
In June 2025, the IDF alleged that Hamas was stealing somewhere from 15% to 25% of humanitarian aid, using aid as a vehicle for smuggling goods like cigarettes, and reselling the materials under inflated pricing. In July of that year, the IDF asserted that Hamas terrorists looted aid trucks.
The assertions about Hamas’ activities came as a narrative exploded about mass starvation and famine spreading in Gaza, as the war against the perpetrators of the October 7 massacre continued. The aid regime developed under Israel’s military operations, with the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation at its center, was widely scrutinized across mainstream outlets.
Heavily critical reports of the IDF claims were published throughout those same months, including a July 26, 2025 Reuters report about an unpublished US Agency for International Development (USAID) review that supposedly detailed that there was no evidence of Hamas aid abuse.
Despite the great interest previously shown in the humanitarian aid system in Gaza, only a handful of major outlets have broached the UNSCO revelations of widespread Hamas aid abuse. Some, like Al Jazeera, only did so through the lens of Hamas’ denial of the allegations.
A weak response to the Saturday incident stands in stark contrast to the extensive coverage about the same time last year.
