US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on Tuesday accused Iran of sheltering al-Qaeda. The top American diplomat claimed that the Islamic Republic had replaced Afghanistan as the home base of the terror group.
The US alleges that the mullahs struck a deal to allow al-Qaeda’s leadership to centralize in Iran around the same time the country was finalizing the nuclear deal with Western powers.
In his remarks, Pompeo explained how the new terror alliance threatens peace and security in the Middle East and beyond, calling it a “massive force for evil all over the world.” He also warned of possible terror attacks against nations that have recently normalized relations with Israel under the auspices of the US-mediated Abraham Accords.
The apparent revelation comes as Iran is moving rapidly to enrich uranium to 20 percent purity, a relatively short technical step away from weapons-grade material.
