Britain’s government advisor on terrorism has warned that attacks on Jews are now one of the country’s most urgent national security concerns. For many British Jews, that warning reflects daily reality.
Synagogues have been attacked, Jewish businesses vandalized, and visibly Jewish people targeted in the streets. A recent survey found that around one in five British Jews has considered leaving the country because of rising antisemitism.
One factor Britain has been reluctant to confront is Islamist antisemitism. Studies have found a link between antisemitic views and sympathy for Islamist extremism among some British Muslims, while government reviews have warned that officials have neglected this threat.
This does not implicate all Muslims. But it does mean Britain cannot honestly fight antisemitism while ignoring the ideologies fueling it.
Too often, institutions appear more afraid of being accused of anti-Muslim prejudice than of failing to protect Jews.
That hesitation is why so many British Jews are asking whether they still have a future in Britain.
