Ripped Up Resolutions and Onstage Terror Threats: Watch the Most Memorable Israel Moments at the UN (VIDEO)

“Rocky,” “ambivalent,” “strained” and “resentful” are just a handful of the adjectives used to describe Israel’s relationship with the United Nations in the years since the Jewish state first joined the international body as its 59th member in 1949.

The Israeli government has frequently accused the UN of harboring a festering resentment toward Israel, particularly by allowing itself to be used as a “battleground for political warfare” whereby Arab and Islamic countries use their “automatic majority” to ensure the adoption of anti-Israel resolutions.

The anti-Israel bias was reflected in the resolutions passed by the UN last year, which included 14 that specifically condemned Israel compared to just four resolutions against the 194 other countries in the world (North Korea, Iran, Myanmar, and Russia over its activity in Crimea).

In 2006, the then-Secretary General of the United Nations Kofi Annan admitted that Israel was being unfairly targeted. “On one side, supporters of Israel feel that it is harshly judged by standards that are not applied to its enemies. And too often this is true, particularly in some UN bodies,” he said.

The chronic anti-Israel bias that plays out in the General Assembly and within the UN’s many institutions has resulted in numerous history-making moments over the years.

From physically tearing up resolutions to onstage terror threats, HonestReporting has collated the most memorable incidents involving Israel that have ever occurred at the United Nations.
